Last week The College of Rugby (TCOR) played their first fixture against a very well respected side that is part of the Sale Sharks Academy set up. Following a difficult year, the side showed determination and amazing team spirit to tackle their very well respected opponents.
TCOR stepped foot against Myerscough College for their first ever fixture together as a team. From the kick-off the players employed a fast start, with lots of tough contacts made in the middle of the pitch. Forwards working hard to secure possession and play their way through phases. Gaining good field position regularly throughout the game, errors and penalties began to compromise the team’s stance in the competition. Soon enough, players began to dig deeper and move the ball through the hands. Excellent play from forwards and backs, resulted in a try from the left wing by Reece. A second try and conversion was the least TCOR deserved. Injuries, knocks and setbacks continued in the game but the players carried on the fight and displayed their tremendous attitude. The team made history, as well as showing sportsmanship and pride under tough circumstances. Players out of position pushed themselves to exhibit their athleticism, ability and above all enjoyment of the match.
TCOR and VLUK are extremely proud of the application, commitment and work ethic the players showed on the pitch. More pleasing, however, was how they played as a team. Because of the very difficult circumstances of this academic year, through lockdowns and strict RFU guidance curtailing all rugby activity, this was their first match of the year. This did not stop all the players from showing immense team spirit and endeavour. They played honestly, with integrity and strength of character. Looking forward, it is certain they will become a fantastic and formidable unit.
