Learners at our Stagedoor Learning campus have been bringing the subject of British Values to life in their tutorial sessions! The second year BTEC learners organised activities to teach the first years about the five British Values and to engage them in learning in an interactive way.
Each year group was split into smaller groups who took part in a carousel of activities relating to each of the 5 British Values:
Democracy - There were presentations from three second years about why they should be in charge, followed by a vote from the first years, in a voting booth set up in a cupboard, and a discussion about why democracy is important.
Rule of Law - The garage was set up like a court room. The second years have researched unlikely or odd laws (for example - did you know it's illegal to be without shoes and socks within 100 yards of the monarch? And that it's illegal to hold a salmon in a suspicious manner) and then they took a more relevant law (e.g. it's illegal to check your phone if you're driving a car and the engine is running, even if you're stationary) and asked the first years to defend it, using the courtroom set up.
Tolerance - The second years gave the first years a range of scenarios under which people may not feel particularly tolerant and then discussed why tolerance is important.
Mutual Respect - The second year group designed a game which celebrates difference and encouraged the first years to find things they have in common.
Individual Liberty - The second years wrote a song which they taught to the first years, which then generated a discussion about individual liberty.
Also, first year BTEC learners drew around and cut out their hands, and wrote the values on each finger as they went round each of the activities. Not only is it a good way for the first years to learn about the values, but it was a great opportunity for the second years to develop planning and leadership skills.Dominic Anderson, VLUK's Director of Performance, Standards and Curriculum said "This is a wonderful way for our BTEC learners to bring to life the 5 British Values. Well done Stagedoor Learning!".</p>
